How to find the right Memory Cards AI guide
Written by an AI model from its trained knowledge.
What the AI looks for in Memory Cards
- Physical format
- Match the slot exactly: CompactFlash, full-size SD and microSD are not interchangeable. A microSD card can sit in an SD slot through a passive adapter, but not the other way round. The format is set by the device and cannot be negotiated.
- Capacity family vs host
- SDHC covers 4–32GB, SDXC covers 32GB–2TB and SDUC goes above 2TB. The host must list the family it supports. Older SDHC-only devices cannot read SDXC cards, which are usually formatted exFAT.
- Sustained write class
- Use V30/U3 for 4K video, V60 or V90 for high-bitrate or RAW video, and VPG-65 for CompactFlash video. Headline speeds are read speeds. Dropped frames come from slow sustained writes.
- Bus interface
- UHS-II cards only run faster in UHS-II hosts, which have a second row of pins. microSD Express needs an Express-capable host. In an older slot these cards fall back to UHS-I speed, so the premium is wasted.
- Endurance for continuous recording
- Dashcams and security cameras need cards sold as high- or max-endurance. Constant overwriting wears out standard cards quickly.
Brands that matter
- SanDisk: Widest range across all three formats and the default in pro photography.
- Samsung: Strong consumer microSD and SD lines with good sustained performance.
- Lexar: Long-standing professional CF and SD cards.
- Kingston: Reliable mid-range Canvas series.
- ProGrade Digital: Pro-focused UHS-II and CF cards.
- Sony: TOUGH series of rugged UHS-II SD cards.
What to avoid
- Unknown brands claiming implausibly large capacities, which are often fake-capacity cards
- Paying for UHS-II or microSD Express when the device has a UHS-I slot
- Choosing on read speed alone for video recording
- Standard cards in dashcams or security cameras
Questions
Are CFast or CFexpress the same as CompactFlash?
No. Both use different connectors and only fit cameras built for them.
Will a 1TB card work in my older camera?
Only if the camera supports SDXC. Check the manual for the supported card families.
