How to find the right Computer Networking Transceivers AI guide
Written by an AI model from its trained knowledge.
What the AI looks for in Computer Networking Transceivers
- Form factor and speed
- Match the cage: SFP is 1 Gbps, SFP+ is 10 Gbps, SFP28 is 25 Gbps, and QSFP+/QSFP28 is 40/100 Gbps. A module only runs at speeds the port supports, and some SFP+ ports do not accept 1G SFP modules.
- Fiber type and reach
- Multimode (SR, 850 nm) for short in-building runs. Single-mode (LR, 1310 nm and up) for long runs. The modules must match the cable type. Mixing single-mode optics with multimode fiber, or the reverse, causes link failures or errors.
- Both ends match
- Use the same standard and wavelength on both ends. BiDi modules must be bought as a complementary pair. Mismatched wavelengths will not link.
- Vendor coding
- Buy modules coded for your switch brand, since Cisco, Ubiquiti and others may reject uncoded optics. Many switches lock out or warn on third-party modules.
- DAC for short runs
- Within the same rack, use a DAC cable instead of two optics plus fiber. DAC cables are cheaper, cooler and simpler for runs of a few meters.
- RJ45 SFP+ heat
- Use copper 10GBASE-T SFP+ modules sparingly and check the switch's per-port and total power limits. They run hot and some switches limit how many can be installed.
Brands that matter
- FS: Large third-party optics maker that offers vendor-coded modules.
- 10Gtek: Low-cost SFP/SFP+ modules and DAC cables.
- Ubiquiti: First-party modules for UniFi switches.
- Cisco: OEM optics for Cisco gear where support policy requires them.
- MikroTik: Inexpensive modules suited to MikroTik switches.
What to avoid
- Single-mode optics on multimode fiber, or the reverse
- Unpaired BiDi modules
- Packing many RJ45 SFP+ modules side by side in a small switch
- Uncoded optics in switches known to enforce vendor lock
Questions
What's the difference between SR and LR?
SR is short-range multimode at 850 nm for in-building runs, and LR is long-range single-mode at 1310 nm. They cannot talk to each other.
