How to find the right RC Radio Receivers AI guide
Written by an AI model from its trained knowledge.
What the AI looks for in RC Radio Receivers
- Protocol match
- The receiver must support your transmitter's exact protocol, for example Futaba T-FHSS vs S-FHSS, Spektrum DSMR for surface, or FlySky AFHDS 2A vs AFHDS 3. Same brand does not guarantee compatibility, because protocols change across radio generations.
- Channel count
- Have at least as many channels as the functions you'll run, such as steering, throttle, lights, winch and shifting. Extra functions can't be added later without swapping the receiver.
- Input voltage
- The receiver's rated voltage range must cover your ESC/BEC output, especially when running servos at high voltage. Overvoltage kills receivers, and undervoltage causes brownouts and glitches.
- Fail-safe
- Throttle fail-safe must be programmable to neutral or brake. It prevents runaways on signal loss.
- Gyro / telemetry
- Choose a built-in gyro for drift or high-speed cars and telemetry ports if you want voltage, temperature or RPM. These are cheaper and simpler built in than added separately.
- Water resistance and size
- Use a sealed or waterproof receiver for bashers and crawlers, and a compact case for tight chassis. Water and mud are the most common cause of receiver failure in surface RC.
Brands that matter
- Futaba: Surface receivers for T-FHSS and S-FHSS radios.
- Spektrum: DSMR surface receivers, including AVC stability and Smart telemetry.
- FlySky: Inexpensive receivers for AFHDS radios, handy for big fleets.
- Radiolink: Gyro and telemetry receivers matched to its radios.
- Sanwa: Racing-oriented receivers for its high-response protocols.
- RadioMaster: Surface receivers for its multi-protocol and ELRS radios.
What to avoid
- Unbranded 'compatible' receivers with no clear fail-safe setup.
- Assuming Traxxas TQi or other RTR-locked receivers will bind to a third-party transmitter.
- Running a receiver at a BEC voltage above its rating.
Questions
My radio is Spektrum. Will an air receiver work in my car?
Not usually. Spektrum surface radios use DSMR while many air receivers are DSMX/DSM2, so buy a receiver listed for your surface transmitter.
