What the AI looks for in Mortar Mix

Mortar type
Type N is for general above-grade walls. Type S is for below grade, retaining walls and higher lateral loads. Type M is for heavy-load foundations. Type O is for interior non-load-bearing work and soft historic masonry. All are defined by ASTM C270. Mortar that is too weak fails structurally, and mortar that is too hard cracks softer brick.
Match to the masonry unit
Mortar should be weaker than the brick or stone it joins. Old soft brick needs a lime-rich mortar, not Type S. When the mortar is harder than the brick, the brick cracks and spalls instead of the joint.
Heat exposure
Use refractory mortar for firebrick in fireboxes, ovens and forges, never standard masonry mortar. Portland cement mortar breaks down under direct flame.
Tile is a different product
Set tile with thinset mortar, not masonry mortar mix. Masonry mortar lacks the bond strength and polymers that tile needs.
Working time
Mix only what you can use in about 1 to 2 hours, and retemper at most once early on. Mortar that has started to set and is then rewetted bonds poorly.

Questions

Mortar mix or concrete for setting pavers or caps?

Mortar bonds units together in thin joints. Concrete is for structural pours 2 in or thicker. For mortared joints and caps, use mortar of the right type.
