How to find the right Raw Lumber AI guide

What the AI looks for in Raw Lumber
- Nominal vs actual size
- Dimensional softwood is sold nominally: a 2x4 measures about 1.5 x 3.5 in. Hardwood is sold in quarters, such as 4/4, and may be rough or surfaced. Cut lists based on nominal sizes come out wrong.
- Moisture content
- For indoor furniture, use kiln-dried wood at roughly 6 to 8 percent moisture content, and let it acclimate indoors before milling. Wet wood shrinks, warps and cracks after assembly.
- Treated lumber use category
- Use ground-contact rated pressure-treated wood (AWPA UC4A or higher) for posts and anything touching soil. Above-ground (UC3B) wood is for decking and rails only. Above-ground treatment rots quickly when buried.
- Fasteners for treated wood
- Use hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners and connectors with modern copper-based treated lumber. The copper preservatives corrode plain steel.
- Grade stamp
- Structural framing should carry a grading agency stamp showing species and grade. Unstamped wood of unknown grade is not reliable for loads or inspections.
What to avoid
- Burning or indoor-cutting pressure-treated wood without dust protection
- Above-ground treated lumber for buried posts
- Building furniture with wood that has not acclimated
